The Government of Tierra del Fuego presented the results of a study on the capture and storage of carbon in Fuegian forests and peatlands, conducted by the consultancy Fotosíntesis Forest Management and Investment. The study covered more than 195,000 hectares, including the nine Forest Production Reserves and the regulated peat extraction area, and concluded that the development of carbon credit projects is technically and economically feasible.
The Minister of Production and Environment, Karina Fernández, emphasized that this progress represents a strategic step toward a development model that combines environmental sustainability, social impact, and economic opportunities. Meanwhile, the Secretary of Productive Development and SMEs, Carolina Hernández, stressed that current forest management and restoration practices are far below recommended levels, and that expanding them requires funding that cannot be obtained solely through the Forest Law.
This initiative is part of the National Strategy for the Use of Carbon Markets, positioning Tierra del Fuego as a key player in climate change mitigation and in generating resources aimed at conserving its ecosystems.
