The Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the most iconic in Argentine Patagonia and long recognized for its stability, is now experiencing an unprecedented retreat: it has receded about 800 meters in just four years, and scientific studies warn it is approaching an irreversible collapse.
Recent research shows that the glacier’s thinning rate has increased more than tenfold since 2019, jumping from 0.34 meters per year to 5.5 meters per year. This acceleration is linked to rising global temperatures, the loss of contact with the rocky bed, and reduced snow accumulation.
