First held in 1974, it has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging\u00a0<a title=\"Environmental issue\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Environmental_issue\">environmental issues<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0<a title=\"Marine pollution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marine_pollution\">marine pollution<\/a>, human\u00a0<a title=\"Overpopulation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Overpopulation\">overpopulation<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Global warming\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Global_warming\">global warming<\/a>, to\u00a0<a title=\"Sustainable consumption\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainable_consumption\">sustainable consumption<\/a>\u00a0and wildlife crime. WED has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually.
