The heat, accompanied by moist air, is entering the Arctic not only through the sector of the North Atlantic Ocean that lies between Greenland and Europe, as it has done in previous years, but is also coming from the North Pacific through the Bering Strait.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"column-width embedded_video video_player_container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"Z_9WbrPCMbc\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z_9WbrPCMbc?rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;html5=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><figcaption>Sea ice plays an important role in maintaining Earth&#8217;s temperature, so studying it helps us understand our warming climate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen winter warming events before, but they\u2019re becoming more frequent and more intense,\u201d said Alek Petty, a sea ice researcher at NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are waiting to see how much this heat wave will impact the wintertime sea ice maximum extent, which has been shrinking in the past decades and has hit bottom lows each of the past three years. The sea ice levels are already at record lows or near-record lows in several areas of the Arctic.
